In the last few decades, much advancement has been made in understanding and treating mental disorders. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is currently in its fourth revision. The current edition, DSM-IV-Text Revision, presents several hundred criteria sets for diagnosis of mental disorders, 11 appendices, and over 900 pages of text. This substantial volume is intended to assist mental health and medical professionals with the differential diagnosis of mental health problems.
This course is designed to instruct students both in differential diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. This course provides the essential skills and knowledge needed for clinicians to use the DSM-IV-TR as a tool as well as to identify effective treatments. These skills include formulating a five-axis diagnosis, making differential diagnoses, and selecting effective treatments.- Substance abuse counseling has achieved a great importance in recent times because substance abuse is a major problem affecting a number of members in our society. The consequences of substance abuse ranges from rise in violence and crime to destruction of individuals, family, and social life. Substance abuse counseling help people rebuild their lives and lead a better and happier life and become productive members of the society.
The course provides an overview of substance abuse counseling field. The course is designed to provide an insight into the substance abuse treatment. It gives you broad perspectives on the treatment and intervention approaches that are effective with the substance abuse offenders. In the course you will discover the characteristics and traits of the offenders, treatment modalities and their effectiveness in treating substance abuse. The text and assignments are designed to introduce the student to the field.
